Hamilton Mary P. Hamlin, George Arliss
A Hamilton play a century before the musical: George Arliss's stage vehicle about the funding fight and the Reynolds blackmail, built for strong curtain lines. Creaky in places, brisk in most, and fascinating as what 1917 wanted its founders to be.
Leaves of Grass Walt Whitman
Poetry that talks straight to you, sometimes a century ahead of schedule, like in Crossing Brooklyn Ferry where he addresses future readers by name, meaning you. Whitman rambles and repeats himself, sure, but read Song of Myself aloud and see if your chest doesn't loosen.
Struggles and Triumphs P. T. Barnum no ficción
You read this for Barnum’s shameless, fascinating account of turning hoaxes, curiosities, and publicity into a career, with the Jenny Lind tour and American Museum at its center. He is boastful and slippery about his own virtue, but that self-promotion is half the entertainment, especially if you enjoy watching a showman build his legend in real time.
The Country Wife William Wycherley
You get a filthy, sharply engineered Restoration comedy, with Horner’s fake impotence setting off Pinchwife’s paranoid jealousy and Margery’s blunt country innocence. The sexual politics are ugly in places, but the wordplay and social hypocrisy stay wonderfully alive if you enjoy comedy with teeth.
