- If you can forgive Henty's stiff Victorian dialogue and his habit of pausing for history lessons, this one moves: Beric goes from Boadicea's doomed revolt to the Roman arena, and the scene where he faces a lion earns its keep. Good rainy-Saturday adventure, not literature.
- Ten Days That Shook the World no ficciónReed was actually there, dashing between Smolny and the Winter Palace in November 1917, and it reads like dispatches scribbled on the run, crowds, speeches, rumors flying. Fair warning, he's openly rooting for the Bolsheviks and the flood of committee names takes patience, but the immediacy is real.
- Harry Feversham gets branded a coward before he's done anything, and the book is his slow, secret answer to it, one returned feather at a time. It's earnest Edwardian adventure with a surprisingly tender heart, especially around Durrance, and it rewards a patient reader.
