- Richard is unbearable while he's winning and mesmerizing once he starts to lose, talking himself into and out of kingship in some of the most musical verse Shakespeare wrote. It's all poetry and no sword fights, so come for the language or not at all.
- You sit with Boethius in prison as Lady Philosophy patiently takes apart his ideas about luck, suffering, and what happiness can survive when everything is taken away. The arguments can feel austere, but the alternating poems and prose make it oddly intimate, especially if you enjoy being challenged rather than comforted.
- Fair warning, it's long and blood-soaked, and the battle scenes name every man who falls. But underneath is Achilles wrecked by grief, and that scene where Priam kneels before his son's killer will stay with you; if you can handle slow patches, it earns everything.
- You get a strange, funny, sometimes brutal journey home, but the real pleasure is watching Penelope and Telemachus hold their lives together while Odysseus keeps meeting monsters, gods, and his own cleverness. The episodic structure takes patience, yet its images and voices stay wonderfully vivid.
