The Theory of the Leisure Class Thorstein Veblen
You get a sharp, surprisingly funny way to see status games everywhere, from conspicuous clothing to expensive entertainments and the social value of doing nothing. Veblen’s prose is dense and sometimes repetitive, but his dry irony rewards patience, especially when you recognize “pecuniary emulation” in modern life.
Through the Brazilian Wilderness Theodore Roosevelt no ficción
Roosevelt cataloguing birds and piranhas is pleasant enough, but the book turns quietly harrowing once the River of Doubt starts eating canoes and he's running a fever, still writing calmly. If you like old expedition accounts with real teeth, this earns its slow stretches.
