- Heretics no ficciónYou get Chesterton at his most argumentative and nimble, dismantling the comfortable opinions of writers like Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells with paradoxes that keep turning in your hands. It can feel repetitive and very Edwardian, but if you like essays that make you laugh and then rethink an ordinary assumption, it earns your time.
- A man named Innocent Smith blows into a dreary boarding house, gets charged with burglary and bigamy, and both crimes turn out to be arguments for being alive. It's Chesterton at his silliest and most sincere, so skip it if whimsy with a sermon inside annoys you.
- You get a king who turns London's boroughs into medieval fiefdoms as a joke, and one man, Adam Wayne, who takes it dead seriously and goes to war over a little street of shops. It's funny, then oddly moving, and it never quite picks a side.
- You find Belloc’s argument strikingly direct: when property becomes concentrated, wage earners lose real independence, and the state ends up managing their lives through labor and relief. It’s a polemical, Catholic-inflected book with some dated assumptions, but its questions about ownership and freedom still give you plenty to argue with.
