- Laura spends twenty years as everyone's useful spinster aunt before she quietly moves to a village in the Chilterns and, well, takes up with the devil, who turns out to be rather mild company. Warner's prose is dry and sly, and the ending's speech about women wanting lives of their own still lands hard.
- You get a wonderfully methodical early police procedural, with Inspector French tracing a human body packed into a cask through shipping records, witnesses, and shifting alibis. It takes its time and occasionally feels procedural in the old-fashioned sense, but the patient reconstruction is quietly satisfying.
