- Fair warning, it's a slow, strange ride, knights jousting on repeat in old prose that takes some settling into. But if you let it work on you, Lancelot's divided heart and the whole doomed slide toward Camlann land with a sadness modern retellings rarely earn.
- Fair warning, this isn't Jeeves territory: it's Wodehouse trying an actual domestic drama, a young painter's marriage nearly wrecked by money and a bossy aunt who raises the baby by scientific theory in a germ-proof nursery. If you're curious what he sounds like being earnest, it's oddly touching.
- You’ll have fun watching Lupin turn locked rooms, disguises, and police traps into little games of wit, especially when he toys with Inspector Ganimard. The early stories are brisk and episodic, with a pleasantly theatrical, old-fashioned style, so settle in for charm and cleverness rather than psychological depth.
- You get Count Fosco, a villain so charming you catch yourself liking him, and Marian Halcombe, who's braver than any of the men. It's long and Victorian, sure, but the moonlit road meeting hooks you early and the plotting stays sharp all the way through.
- You’ll like the early Wodehouse looseness here: penniless Lord Dawlish drifts into an American millionaire’s household, where English dignity keeps colliding with money and common sense. It’s frothy and slightly less polished than the later novels, but the social absurdity and dry one-liners are already doing their work.
