- Chichikov rides around buying up dead serfs from provincial landowners, and every one of them (dreamy Manilov, miserly Plyushkin) is funnier and sadder than the last. It's absurd, digressive, and unfinished, which somehow suits it.
- Fair warning, it's a slow, strange ride, knights jousting on repeat in old prose that takes some settling into. But if you let it work on you, Lancelot's divided heart and the whole doomed slide toward Camlann land with a sadness modern retellings rarely earn.
- You get a wonderfully odd comic novel in Mr Salteena, a fussy, socially ambitious man forever trying to pass as a gentleman, while the misspellings and solemnly adult phrasing make every dinner, proposal, and social maneuver tilt sideways. It’s slight and peculiar, but perfect when you want something genuinely funny and unlike anything else.
