Catriona Robert Louis Stevenson
You get David Balfour older, more thoughtful, and still tangled in the aftermath of the Appin murder, with Alan Breck bringing his sharp-edged loyalty along for the ride. It’s slower and more talkative than Kidnapped, but the Edinburgh streets, courtroom maneuvering, and wary romance with Catriona have a lovely, lived-in richness.
The Pothunters P. G. Wodehouse
You get the early Wodehouse pleasure here: St Austin’s boys, school rivalries, cricket, and a stolen trophy turning ordinary school life into cheerful melodrama. It’s slimmer and less polished than his later comedies, but the brisk mischief and affectionate ear for schoolboy absurdity are already in place.
Whose Body? Dorothy L. Sayers
A stranger's body turns up in a bathtub wearing nothing but a pince-nez, and Lord Peter Wimsey investigates mostly because it amuses him. The banter is the point here, though Sayers gives him real shell shock underneath, which keeps the froth from floating away entirely.
