Elmer Gantry Sinclair Lewis
You get a funny, often ugly look at American revivalism through Elmer Gantry, a talented salesman who treats religion as another route to power. The satire is broad and the sermons can run long, but his shameless self-invention remains horribly recognizable.
Human Nature and Conduct John Dewey no ficción
Dewey argues that morality lives in habits, not willpower, and once that clicks you start noticing it everywhere in your own day. Fair warning, it reads like patient lectures, not stories, so bring some coffee, but he's surprisingly plainspoken for a philosopher and oddly comforting.
Passages from the Life of a Philosopher Charles Babbage
Babbage is cranky, brilliant, and completely unable to stay on topic, so you get the Analytical Engine one chapter and a war on London's organ grinders the next. If you enjoy an eccentric Victorian mind wandering wherever it pleases, this is good company; skip it if you want tidy memoir.
