Epic Poems
Long narrative poems, most in English translation, plus Dante, Camões and Martín Fierro in the original Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
- The Iliad English
- The Odyssey English
- The Aeneid EnglishYou get a hero who keeps moving because duty leaves him little choice, even when it means abandoning Dido and descending into the underworld to face what comes next. The poetry can feel formal and deliberate, but its mix of grandeur, grief, and political unease stays with you.
- Beowulf EnglishYou get a spare, strange world of boasts, loyalty, feasts, and sudden violence, where Beowulf faces Grendel and later meets a dragon as an aging king. The alliterative verse can feel austere at first, but its stark images and sense of doom stay with you.
- The Divine Comedy EnglishHell is the fun part, honestly: Dante keeps fainting, Virgil keeps steadying him, and old enemies get named and shamed in the ice. It asks patience (Paradiso gets very abstract), but as a walk through one man's whole moral universe, nothing else feels like it.
- Paradise Lost EnglishSatan gets all the best lines, and watching him talk himself into ruin is half the pull; the verse is dense and takes a slow ear, but once the rhythm clicks it carries you. Read it aloud when you can, even a page at a time.
- The Lusiads EnglishAn epic poem where Vasco da Gama's actual voyage gets tangled up with Venus and Bacchus meddling from Olympus, and the giant Adamastor rising out of the Cape is genuinely eerie. Slow going if verse epics aren't your thing, but the sea feels real in it.
- Metamorphoses EnglishYou dip in anywhere and someone's turning into a laurel tree, a spider, a constellation, and Ovid tells it all with this sly, gossipy relish, like the gods are neighbors behaving badly. Read it in pieces, a few myths at a time, and it stays fun.
- The Kalevala EnglishYou get a strange, musical world of singing contests, forged treasures, marriages, feuds, and spells, with Väinämöinen winning battles through knowledge as often as force. The episodes feel uneven and dreamlike, but the repeated charms and the bleak Kullervo story stay with you.
- The Nibelungenlied EnglishIf you think medieval epics are all shining knights, wait until Kriemhild spends twenty years planning her revenge and the last third becomes a slaughter in a burning hall. It's stark and cold-blooded and strangely modern about grudges, though the formal verse takes some settling into.
- Orlando Furioso EnglishYou’ll enjoy its wild, comic sprawl if you can forgive it wandering: Orlando loses his wits over Angelica, knights charge through enchanted forests, and Ariosto keeps interrupting himself with sly asides. It feels less like a straight adventure than a brilliantly unruly storyteller refusing to stay on one road.
- The Faerie Queene EnglishYou need patience with the archaic diction and long allegorical detours, but Redcrosse blundering through error and Britomart discovering courage and desire make the poem feel surprisingly alive. Read it slowly, a canto at a time, for its strange forests, giants, monsters, and enchantments.
- The Argonautica EnglishYou get a strange, finely detailed voyage with the Argonauts, from the clashing rocks to the uneasy company aboard ship. It moves more quietly than Homer, but Medea’s divided thoughts give the old heroic story a surprisingly intimate, psychologically alert center.
- Pan Tadeusz EnglishHalf of it is just people arguing over hunting dogs, picking mushrooms, and stirring bigos while Napoleon looms offstage, and that's the point: Mickiewicz is memorializing a vanished world he loved. Read it slow, in a good verse translation, when you want homesickness for a place you've never been.
