The West, from Both Sides
The American West as settlers and ranchers saw it and as Native writers told it, in novels, stories and memoirs.
- My Ántonia EnglishYou follow Jim Burden’s memory of Ántonia from a bleak Nebraska childhood into the complicated fullness of adult life, and the prairie slowly becomes a place of loss, work, and hard-won belonging. It’s quiet and sometimes melancholy, but Ántonia’s stubborn vitality gives the book its warmth.
- American Indian Stories EnglishShe writes about being lured from her mother's Dakota home to a missionary boarding school, and the scene where she hides under a bed while they come to cut her hair will stay with you. Quiet, angry, tender pieces, short enough to read in an evening.
- The Virginian EnglishYou settle into the Virginian’s dry humor, quiet competence, and complicated code, while Molly Wood keeps questioning the violence that code permits. The Wyoming setting feels spacious and dusty, though the dialect and leisurely pace take some getting used to.
- Cogewea, the Half-Blood English
1927, one of the first novels by a Native American woman: Mourning Dove, of the Okanagan.
- O Pioneers! EnglishYou settle into Alexandra Bergson’s hard, hopeful work of making a life from Nebraska prairie, and the land gradually feels as present as any person. Cather keeps the prose plain and spacious, but loneliness, desire, and the costs of belonging give it a quiet ache.
- Geronimo’s Story of His Life EnglishYou hear Geronimo describe Apache life, warfare, grief, and surrender in a voice that feels bluntly personal, even as the translated, edited text reminds you someone else is shaping it. It’s a valuable, sometimes stark read, especially if you want history from the person being conquered, not just about him.
- Roughing It EnglishYou’re in the hands of an unreliable travel companion as Twain moves through stagecoach dust, Virginia City silver camps, Mormon stories, and a wildly embellished trip to Hawaii. It’s episodic and sometimes wanders, but his deadpan eye makes frontier boasting feel freshly ridiculous.
- Old Indian Legends EnglishYou get vivid, spare retellings where Iktomi’s schemes keep collapsing under his own foolishness, while animals, spirits, and children carry serious lessons about vanity and courage. The storytelling feels spoken aloud, with a quiet strangeness that rewards reading slowly rather than rushing from tale to tale.
- Riders of the Purple Sage EnglishYou’ll like the stark Utah setting and the way Jane Withersteen’s decency collides with a whole community’s religious power. Lassiter brings a dangerous, almost mythic edge, while Venters and Bess give the story its tenderness.
- Death Comes for the Archbishop EnglishYou settle into the slow, clear beauty of Bishop Latour and Father Vaillant crossing the New Mexico wilderness, where friendship, faith, and the harsh landscape matter more than plot. It’s quiet and episodic, but the cathedral rising in Santa Fe gives the book a steady, human center.
- The Octopus EnglishYou get a sprawling, angry novel about California wheat farmers crushed between drought, debt, and the railroad, with Presley observing while Magnus Derrick and Buck Annixter fight back in very different ways. It can be melodramatic and grim, but its landscapes and sense of economic violence stay with you.
- McTeague EnglishYou get a grim, oddly funny study of McTeague’s brute simplicity and Trina’s tightening grip on money, set among cramped San Francisco lives. Norris writes with a cold naturalist eye, so the book feels harsh and sometimes excessive, but its ugly details stay with you.
- The Song of the Lark EnglishYou settle into Thea Kronborg’s stubborn, solitary climb from a Nebraska girl who plays piano for church services to an opera singer shaped by Chicago and the canyon country of Arizona. It’s patient and sometimes austere, but Cather makes artistic ambition feel physical, costly, and deeply alive.
- Laughing Boy EnglishYou get a patient, beautifully textured novel in Laughing Boy’s love for Slim Girl, where Navajo customs and the pressure of white America shape every choice. Its sympathy is real, though the 1920s anthropological gaze and ideas about race can feel dated, so it rewards historically aware readers.
- Cimarron EnglishYancey Cravat is all swagger and vanishing acts, but the book quietly belongs to Sabra, who stays in dusty Osage running the newspaper while he chases the next frontier. You'd come for the land rush, then stay for her slow, stubborn hardening over forty years.
- Fair warning, it's an anthology of old range verse, so the rhymes can be rough as saddle leather, but between the campfire doggerel you get real loneliness, night-herding laments, dead friends buried on the lone prairie. If you like your Americana unpolished and homesick, this earns its keep.
