- Dr. Wortle’s School EnglishTrollope at his most compact and generous: a stubborn, warm-hearted headmaster decides to stand by a teacher whose marriage hides a genuine scandal, and you spend the book watching decency wrestle with gossip. Quiet, funny about clergymen, and shorter than his usual doorstops.
- The Vicar of Bullhampton EnglishFrank Fenwick is a vicar who fights dirty for people the parish would rather forget, especially Carry Brattle, whose gruff old father can't forgive her. It moves at Trollope's ambling pace, but if you like decent people being stubborn about kindness, this one quietly earns its keep.
