- Coriolanus EnglishYou get a fiercely strange tragedy about pride, hunger, and the impossibility of speaking to people you despise. Coriolanus is magnificent and maddening, while Volumnia’s hard, hungry love gives the play its deepest ache; the Roman politics can feel blunt, but the language cuts.
- Ethics EnglishYou find a severe, strangely liberating book here: Spinoza’s definitions and proofs lead from God or Nature to emotions, desire, and the hard-won freedom of understanding why you act. The geometric format is dry at first, but its account of jealousy, sadness, and steadiness feels remarkably intimate.
- New Grub Street EnglishYou get a painfully sharp look at literary ambition through Edwin Reardon’s scruples and poverty, set against Jasper Milvain’s cheerful careerism. It’s bleak, talk-heavy, and slow in places, but the clash between making art and making money still feels uncomfortably close to home.
- Richard III EnglishRichard talks straight to you from the first speech, so you end up half rooting for a murderer and enjoying it, especially when he woos Anne over her father-in-law's coffin. If you like villains who make you complicit, this moves fast and never apologizes.
- The Social Contract saggistica EnglishYou get a bracing argument about political freedom, especially in Rousseau’s insistence that obeying laws you help make is different from submitting to a ruler. The prose can feel abstract and combative, but his questions about inequality, citizenship, and the general will keep needling you afterward.
- You get why people still quote it once Mephistopheles calmly admits he's in hell right now, standing there. The middle sags into slapstick with popes and horse traders, honestly, but Faustus watching his last hour tick away is worth the whole slim thing.
- The Vicomte de Bragelonne EnglishYou settle in for a long, melancholy farewell to Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d’Artagnan, now older and pulled apart by politics, loyalty, and ambition. It moves more slowly than the earlier musketeer novels, but its sense of friendship aging into legend has real weight.
