Anna Karenina Leo Tolstoy, tradotto da Constance Garnett English
Tolstoy follows Anna's affair and Levin's awkward farming life in parallel, and somehow the mowing scenes stay with you as long as the tragedy does. It's long and unhurried, but you come out knowing these people better than some of your actual relatives.
Ethics Benedictus de Spinoza English
You find a severe, strangely liberating book here: Spinoza’s definitions and proofs lead from God or Nature to emotions, desire, and the hard-won freedom of understanding why you act. The geometric format is dry at first, but its account of jealousy, sadness, and steadiness feels remarkably intimate.
