A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder James De Mille English
A shipwrecked sailor stumbles into an Antarctic society where poverty is prestige, darkness is beautiful, and being killed is an honor, and the satire sneaks up on you. The yachtsmen who find the manuscript keep interrupting to argue about it, which is half the fun.
In Search of the Castaways Jules Verne, tradotto da J. B. Lippincott & Co. English
Verne at his most cheerful: a half-eaten note in a bottle sends Lord Glenarvan's crew chasing the 37th parallel around the globe, and the scatterbrained geographer Paganel (who boarded the wrong ship entirely) steals every scene. Pure adventure, earthquakes and condors included, no deep themes required.
The Humbugs of the World P. T. Barnum saggistica English
Yes, the great showman himself grousing about frauds, and the irony lands better than you'd expect. He goes after spirit mediums, quack medicines, the Moon Hoax, all in chatty anecdotes, and half the fun is watching him carefully separate his kind of humbug from the cruel kind.
The Last Man Mary Shelley English
Fair warning, it starts slow and stays sad, but watching Lionel Verney lose the whole world one friend at a time is quietly devastating, and Adrian and Raymond are really Shelley grieving Percy and Byron on the page. Read it when you want company in loneliness, not escape.
