Mr. Incoul’s Misadventure Edgar Saltus English
If you like your Gilded Age fiction cold-blooded, this delivers: a rich, unreadable husband, his young wife Maida, an old lover, and revenge served with terrifying politeness. Saltus writes in glittering little epigrams, and the ending is genuinely chilling, so don't expect comfort.
The Purple Land W. H. Hudson English
You follow Richard Lamb through Uruguay, where failed revolutions, gauchos, bandits, and bewildering hospitality turn his romantic confidence inside out. The book wanders like a long horseback conversation, funny and oddly tender, with landscapes that linger; its loose, episodic shape suits you if you enjoy travel more than plot.
