Antony and Cleopatra William Shakespeare English
These two aren't young lovers, they're middle-aged, vain, magnificent messes who keep wrecking empires over each other, and you half want to shake them. Stay for Enobarbus, the dry-eyed friend whose barge speech about Cleopatra is worth the whole play.
The Sport of the Gods Paul Laurence Dunbar English
You feel the Berry family’s displacement in every cramped room and dangerous New York street, while Dunbar’s anger at racist power stays close to the surface. It’s melodramatic and sometimes blunt, but Hester’s fear and Joe’s reckless hunger for freedom give the novel real emotional weight.
