Aurora Floyd M. E. Braddon English
If you liked Lady Audley's Secret, this is Braddon in a warmer mood: Aurora is impulsive and flawed (she horsewhips a stablehand in one startling scene) but you end up rooting for her anyway. It's melodrama with blackmail and a murder, so come ready for that.
Short Fiction Nikolai Gogol, tradotto da Claud Field, Isabel F. Hapgood, Vizetelly and Company, George Tolstoy English
You get Gogol at his strangest and sharpest here: a nose walking around St. Petersburg, a petty clerk swallowed by his overcoat, and a diary quietly coming apart. The comedy is wonderfully deadpan, but the loneliness underneath keeps it from feeling weightless.
Tono-Bungay H. G. Wells English
Forget the Martians, this is Wells writing about his own world: George watching his uncle puff a worthless tonic into a fortune, and the whole rickety empire of advertising and borrowed money wobbling underneath. Funny and sad at once, and weirdly current about how hype works.
