After London Richard Jefferies English
You get a strangely beautiful, slow-blooming post-apocalyptic England, where forests swallow roads and rivers run wild after civilization vanishes. The later story follows Felix and Aurora through a harsher, more conventional adventure, so read it for Jefferies’s eerie landscape-writing as much as the uneven plot.
Henry VIII William Shakespeare English
You’ll like it for its grand, ceremonial feel and the sharp human cost beneath the pageantry, especially in Katherine of Aragon’s dignity and Wolsey’s sudden collapse. It’s episodic and more interested in public power than intimate character, so expect a stately history play rather than another Hamlet.
Les Misérables Victor Hugo, tradotto da Isabel F. Hapgood English
Yes, it's huge, and Hugo will stop everything for fifty pages on the Paris sewers, but Jean Valjean lifting that cart, or the bishop handing over his candlesticks, will sit in your chest for years. Skim the digressions if you must; the mercy at the center holds.
Poetry Wilfred Owen English
Fair warning, these are hard poems, gas attacks and boys dying in the mud, but Owen writes them with such tenderness that you come out feeling more human, not less. Strange Meeting alone, two soldiers talking in some underworld, will sit with you for weeks.
Richard III William Shakespeare English
Richard talks straight to you from the first speech, so you end up half rooting for a murderer and enjoying it, especially when he woos Anne over her father-in-law's coffin. If you like villains who make you complicit, this moves fast and never apologizes.
The Beetle Richard Marsh English
You’ll enjoy its feverish Victorian weirdness, especially the shifting accounts of Robert Holt, Marjorie Lindon, and the unnervingly composed Paul Lessingham. It takes its time with melodrama and dread, then turns wonderfully lurid around an Egyptian threat that refuses to stay in one shape.
The Cherry Orchard Anton Chekhov, tradotto da Constance Garnett English
You spend time with the tender, maddening Ranevskaya and the newly wealthy Lopakhin, as everyone talks around the fate of the estate and avoids the decisions that might save it. It’s quietly funny and deeply sad, with the strange feeling of hearing laughter in a house already beginning to empty.
The Decameron Giovanni Boccaccio, tradotto da John Payne English
Ten young Florentines wait out the plague by telling each other stories, and most of them are funnier and filthier than you'd expect from the 1300s, full of scheming friars and wives outwitting dull husbands. Dip in and out; nobody reads all hundred straight through.
The Eclogues Virgil, tradotto da John Dryden English
These are quiet poems, shepherds trading songs while real grief hums underneath, like Meliboeus losing his farm while Tityrus lounges in the shade. If you can slow down enough, the melancholy under all that green is lovely; if you need plot, skip it.
The Magic City E. Nesbit English
You’ll like the way Philip’s furniture-built city feels both gloriously inventive and faintly unsettling, as if a lonely child’s imagination has acquired its own laws. The book takes odd turns and wears its Edwardian assumptions openly, but its tenderness toward neglected, serious-minded children still feels wonderfully real.
The Seagull Anton Chekhov, tradotto da Constance Garnett English
You watch Konstantin’s wounded ambition, Nina’s hunger for the stage, and Arkadina’s brittle charm collide around a disastrous play and a country estate. It’s funny in the way awkward people can be funny, then quietly painful, especially if you like drama that lets everyone misunderstand one another in painfully recognizable ways.
The Woman in White Wilkie Collins English
You get Count Fosco, a villain so charming you catch yourself liking him, and Marian Halcombe, who's braver than any of the men. It's long and Victorian, sure, but the moonlit road meeting hooks you early and the plotting stays sharp all the way through.
Uncle Vanya Anton Chekhov, tradotto da Constance Garnett English
You’ll recognize the ache in Vanya, who has spent his life serving someone else’s work, and in Sonya, quietly carrying on while Astrov dreams of forests and Elena drifts through the room. It’s funny in that painfully human Chekhov way, and its sadness sneaks up on you.
Women in Love D. H. Lawrence English
Lawrence writes arguments between lovers like nobody else, and Birkin and Ursula bicker their way toward something real while Gerald and Gudrun tear each other apart. Fair warning, it's feverish and talky, but if you like feeling ideas in your body, this delivers.
Wuthering Heights Emily Brontë English
Fair warning, almost nobody in it is likable, and that's the point. Heathcliff and Cathy love each other like a grudge, the moors practically howl, and Nelly Dean gossips you through the whole wreck.
