- Hard Times EnglishDickens at his angriest and shortest, which helps if his usual sprawl puts you off. You get Gradgrind drilling children into little fact-machines, then watch that philosophy slowly wreck his own daughter, and Bounderby the self-made blowhard is almost worth the price alone.
- The Mystery of the Yellow Room EnglishA locked room, a woman attacked inside it, and no way anyone got in or out. Rouletabille, the teenage reporter who cracks it, is cocky in a way that grows on you, and the solution actually plays fair.
