- Whose Body? EnglishA stranger's body turns up in a bathtub wearing nothing but a pince-nez, and Lord Peter Wimsey investigates mostly because it amuses him. The banter is the point here, though Sayers gives him real shell shock underneath, which keeps the froth from floating away entirely.
- You Can’t Win EnglishJack was a real burglar and hobo, and he tells it flat and unrepentant, hopping freights, cracking safes, sitting in Salt Chunk Mary's kitchen over beans and coffee. If you like your outlaws matter-of-fact instead of romantic, this is oddly good company, and it convinced Burroughs too.
