The Moon and Sixpence W. Somerset Maugham English
You get a sharply observed, unsettling portrait of Charles Strickland, a respectable London broker who abandons comfort to paint, and of the people damaged by his single-mindedness. Maugham’s narrator keeps the prose cool and conversational, so the book quietly forces you to ask whether artistic conviction excuses cruelty.
Zuleika Dobson Max Beerbohm English
Beerbohm spends a whole novel gleefully drowning Oxford's undergraduates for love of a mediocre conjurer, and somehow it stays light as meringue; the Duke of Dorset's wounded vanity alone is worth it. If you like your comedy arch, mannered, and faintly cruel, this delivers.
