Short Fiction Mary Shelley English
You get Mary Shelley’s darker, stranger side here, especially in “The Mortal Immortal,” where an alchemist’s mistake turns a love story into a meditation on outliving everyone you know. The stories can feel uneven and theatrically gothic, but their loneliness, moral unease, and fascination with bodies that refuse to behave stay with you.
The Viaduct Murder Ronald A. Knox English
Four golfers find a body under a viaduct and detect it half to death, each theory more ingenious and more wrong. Knox is gently mocking the detective story from inside it; funniest if you already love the genre's rules.
You Can’t Win Jack Black English
Jack was a real burglar and hobo, and he tells it flat and unrepentant, hopping freights, cracking safes, sitting in Salt Chunk Mary's kitchen over beans and coffee. If you like your outlaws matter-of-fact instead of romantic, this is oddly good company, and it convinced Burroughs too.
