- All’s Well That Ends Well EnglishHelena chases a man who plainly doesn't deserve her, and the play knows it, which is what makes it interesting. If you like your comedies uneasy, with a bed trick and an ending that only half convinces, this one will stick with you.
- Lady Into Fox EnglishA quiet, strange little fable: a man's wife turns into a fox one afternoon, no explanation given, and he keeps trying to love her as she grows wilder. Told completely straight-faced, which somehow makes it sadder.
- Measure for Measure EnglishShakespeare in a sour, fascinating mood: Angelo, the ice-cold deputy, propositions a novice nun and the play just sits with that ugliness. If you like your comedies uneasy, with an ending that leaves you arguing at the table, this one lingers.
- Melmoth the Wanderer EnglishYou read it for the feverish, maze-like storytelling, as Melmoth turns up in Stanton’s tale and in the strange histories of Immalee and Monçada. It’s long-winded, grim, and often wonderfully excessive, best suited to a patient reader who enjoys gothic dread more than tidy plotting.
- Poor Folk EnglishYou read the letters of Makar Devushkin and Varvara Dobroselova and feel how poverty presses on affection, pride, and ordinary dignity. It’s tender and quietly painful, with Makar’s fussy self-consciousness making the intimacy feel remarkably human.
- Short Fiction EnglishYou get Gogol at his strangest and sharpest here: a nose walking around St. Petersburg, a petty clerk swallowed by his overcoat, and a diary quietly coming apart. The comedy is wonderfully deadpan, but the loneliness underneath keeps it from feeling weightless.
- The Comedy of Errors EnglishYou get a wonderfully fast, physical farce from the twin Antipholuses and twin Dromios, with everyone confidently mistaking the wrong man for someone they know. It’s deliberately slight and noisy, but the escalating confusion, especially around Adriana’s furious domestic arguments, makes Shakespeare feel surprisingly loose and playful.
- The Kalevala EnglishYou get a strange, musical world of singing contests, forged treasures, marriages, feuds, and spells, with Väinämöinen winning battles through knowledge as often as force. The episodes feel uneven and dreamlike, but the repeated charms and the bleak Kullervo story stay with you.
- The Moonstone EnglishYou get the whole mystery told by different narrators who keep giving themselves away, and Betteredge, the old butler who treats Robinson Crusoe like scripture, is worth the price alone. It's long and takes its time, but the puzzle itself plays completely fair with you.
- The Taming of the Shrew EnglishThe fun is watching Kate and Petruchio trade insults at full speed, two clever people who've finally met their match. Fair warning, the "taming" itself sits uneasily now, and Kate's last speech will either charm you or make you argue with the page.
