- The Mysterious Affair at Styles EnglishPoirot's very first case, and half the fun is watching Hastings confidently guess wrong while the little Belgian fusses over spilled candle wax and a spirit lamp. A tidy country-house poisoning, cozy rather than dark, best read with tea and zero hurry.
- The Murder on the Links EnglishYou get Poirot and Hastings in France, a murdered millionaire, and a wonderfully prickly rivalry with the French detective Giraud. The clues can feel deliberately contrived, but if you enjoy Poirot’s vanity and methodical little revelations, the puzzle keeps you happily guessing.
- Poirot Investigates EnglishThese are quick little puzzles, perfect for reading one at bedtime, with Poirot at his most vain (fussing over his moustache, scolding poor Hastings for guessing wrong again). Slighter than the novels, sure, but watching Hastings confidently misread every clue never stops being funny.
- The Murder of Roger Ackroyd EnglishPoirot has retired to a village to grow vegetable marrows, and it goes about as well as you'd expect once a neighbor turns up dead. Half the fun is the doctor narrating and his gossipy sister Caroline; the other half you'll want to discuss immediately after.
- The Big Four EnglishYou get Poirot and Hastings in a brisk, pulpy international chase involving four shadowy masterminds, secret messages, disguises, and an almost comic number of narrow escapes. It’s less a carefully plotted whodunit than a string of extravagant episodes, but the shameless melodrama can be great fun.
- The Mystery of the Blue Train EnglishMid-tier Christie, honestly (she never liked it herself), but Poirot on the night train to Nice, a stolen ruby, and sensible Katherine Grey inheriting money and adventure all at once make it a pleasant few evenings. Good for a rainy weekend, not for converting skeptics.
