Poems to Hear
Poetry with a read-along, so you can follow the lines while a narrator reads them.
- North of Boston EnglishFrost at his least postcard-pretty: long blank-verse conversations between farm neighbors, husbands and wives who can't quite say what they mean. Home Burial will wreck you a little, and Mending Wall is slyer than the line everyone quotes.
- Sonnets from the Portuguese EnglishYou get a remarkably candid record of love taking shape, from guarded doubt to the famous “How do I love thee?” and its steady, almost prayerful answer. The language is ornate and intensely Victorian, but the fear of being unworthy and the relief of being chosen still feel startlingly close.
- Leaves of Grass EnglishPoetry that talks straight to you, sometimes a century ahead of schedule, like in Crossing Brooklyn Ferry where he addresses future readers by name, meaning you. Whitman rambles and repeats himself, sure, but read Song of Myself aloud and see if your chest doesn't loosen.
- Gitanjali EnglishThese are short prose poems Tagore wrote as offerings to God, and they read like someone talking quietly to a friend, about waiting, boats, rain, flute music. Best taken one or two at a time before bed; if you rush it, the stillness that makes it work disappears.
- Songs of a Sourdough EnglishYou get jaunty Yukon ballads, tall tales, and hard-edged frontier characters, with “The Cremation of Sam McGee” and “The Shooting of Dan McGrew” showing Service’s knack for a beat that sticks. It’s broad and melodramatic, but the rhymes make the cold, loneliness, and reckless bravado feel wonderfully immediate.
- Spoon River Anthology EnglishYou hear the dead of Spoon River speak from their graves, each brief epitaph exposing the grudges, compromises, lusts, and private tenderness their neighbors never saw. The voices contradict one another, so the town slowly becomes a messy human chorus rather than a neat moral lesson.
- These are careful, formal couplets in the style of Pope, elegies and hymns mostly, so come patient. But when Wheatley, enslaved and barely twenty, tells the Earl of Dartmouth exactly why she loves freedom, the restraint cracks open and you feel history looking straight at you.
- The Aeneid EnglishYou get a hero who keeps moving because duty leaves him little choice, even when it means abandoning Dido and descending into the underworld to face what comes next. The poetry can feel formal and deliberate, but its mix of grandeur, grief, and political unease stays with you.
- The Prophet EnglishYou spend a few quiet hours with Almustafa answering the people of Orphalese on love, work, sorrow, and freedom. Its wisdom can feel a little incense-heavy, but the short, musical passages reward rereading when you need language for feelings you can sense but cannot quite name.
- The Book of Jade EnglishFair warning, this is decadent verse cranked all the way up: skulls, worms, and a poet so bored with the universe he sneers at his own book. If you have a soft spot for Baudelaire-drunk gloom that occasionally tips into camp, it's a strange, morbid little pleasure.
- Beowulf EnglishYou get a spare, strange world of boasts, loyalty, feasts, and sudden violence, where Beowulf faces Grendel and later meets a dragon as an aging king. The alliterative verse can feel austere at first, but its stark images and sense of doom stay with you.
- The Pearl EnglishFair warning, this is the Victorian underground erotica magazine, not the Steinbeck. It's explicit, repetitive, and often genuinely ugly by modern standards, so it's really only worth your time as a historical curiosity, a peek at what respectable Victorians read in secret.
