Tale lets you read and listen without creating an account. When you are signed out, your reading position, preferences, marks, and downloaded books stay on your device.
accounts
If you choose to sign in, Tale receives your verified email address and an account identifier. Sign in with Apple may provide your name and either your real email address or an Apple private relay address.
An account can store reading progress, reading history, preferences, follows, drafts, submissions, lists, and tales you create so they can work across devices.
analytics
Tale collects information about how the service is used so we can improve it and diagnose problems. This can include pages and books visited, reading and listening activity, searches, feature interactions, referring pages, device and browser information, approximate location, performance data, and errors.
We use Vercel for hosting and aggregate web analytics, PostHog for product analytics and session replay, and Sentry for error reporting. Session replay can include content visible on the screen, but input fields are masked. We do not send sign-in codes, typed email addresses, authored text, private notes, copied passages, or network request contents to product analytics.
Analytics uses a persistent anonymous identifier. If you sign in, analytics may be connected to your Tale account, including its email address and name, so we can understand cross-device use and help with support requests.
Creators receive aggregate reading information about their own work. If you choose to follow a creator, Tale tells you before sharing your name and email address with that creator.
how we use information
We use information to:
- provide and maintain Tale;
- authenticate accounts and sync reading activity;
- deliver requested emails and notifications;
- understand how Tale is used;
- diagnose errors and prevent abuse; and
- respond to support requests.
We use service providers to perform these functions, including Apple, Vercel, PostHog, Sentry, Resend, and our database hosting provider. We do not sell personal information or use it for third-party advertising.
storage and deletion
Tale uses browser or device storage for reading progress, preferences, offline books, authentication, and analytics.
You can delete your account inside the app. Account deletion removes your identity, sessions, synced reading progress and history, follows, and private drafts. Tale may retain publication records and previously published work without your account identity when necessary to preserve the service's publishing record. Information already exported by a creator you chose to follow is outside Tale's control.
We retain other information only as long as it is reasonably needed to operate Tale, provide support, maintain security, or meet legal obligations.
