Jules de Goncourt

- You get a raw, claustrophobic portrait of a Parisian servant whose tenderness, loneliness, and self-destructive appetites are observed without much mercy. The Goncourts’ prose can feel chilly and documentary, but if you can bear its grimness, Germinie’s private life leaves you thinking about how poverty and secrecy distort a person.
