- Aurora Floyd EnglishIf you liked Lady Audley's Secret, this is Braddon in a warmer mood: Aurora is impulsive and flawed (she horsewhips a stablehand in one startling scene) but you end up rooting for her anyway. It's melodrama with blackmail and a murder, so come ready for that.
- Elizabeth and Her German Garden EnglishYou spend time in a German garden with Elizabeth, whose pleasure in flowers and solitude is sharpened by her dry observations of the “Man of Wrath” and the demands of family life. It’s gently funny and quietly rebellious, though its leisurely pace suits you best if you enjoy reflection more than plot.
- The Sport of the Gods EnglishYou feel the Berry family’s displacement in every cramped room and dangerous New York street, while Dunbar’s anger at racist power stays close to the surface. It’s melodramatic and sometimes blunt, but Hester’s fear and Joe’s reckless hunger for freedom give the novel real emotional weight.
