A Prefect’s Uncle P. G. Wodehouse English
Early Wodehouse, before Jeeves, so you get a cheerful school story where a prefect's uncle turns up as a pupil younger than he is, plus a lot of cricket. Gentle fun if you like that world; if cricket bores you, this will test your patience.
Passages from the Life of a Philosopher Charles Babbage English
Babbage is cranky, brilliant, and completely unable to stay on topic, so you get the Analytical Engine one chapter and a war on London's organ grinders the next. If you enjoy an eccentric Victorian mind wandering wherever it pleases, this is good company; skip it if you want tidy memoir.
