- Mauprat EnglishBernard starts out half feral, raised by bandit uncles in a crumbling castle, and Edmée basically refuses to love him until he makes himself worth loving, which takes years. If you like romance that's really about a person slowly being rebuilt, this is unusually satisfying.
- Privy Seal EnglishMiddle book of Ford's Katharine Howard trilogy, and honestly the tensest: Cromwell's web is closing while Katharine, stubborn, Latin-quoting, too honest for the court, walks straight through it. The prose is dense and torchlit, all whispers in corridors, so read it slow, ideally after The Fifth Queen.
- Short Fiction EnglishYou get Mary Shelley’s darker, stranger side here, especially in “The Mortal Immortal,” where an alchemist’s mistake turns a love story into a meditation on outliving everyone you know. The stories can feel uneven and theatrically gothic, but their loneliness, moral unease, and fascination with bodies that refuse to behave stay with you.
- The Lady of the Barge EnglishMostly it's droll Thames-side comedy, skippers and mates scheming over the same girl in the title story, but tucked in among the jokes sit The Monkey's Paw and The Well, which still genuinely chill. Good bedside reading, one story at a time, half grins and the occasional shiver.
