- Can You Forgive Her? EnglishAlice Vavasor can't decide between two men and keeps making it worse, and Trollope refuses to mock her for it. It's long and unhurried, but Glencora Palliker's miserable marriage sneaks up and becomes the real heart, and the widow Greenow's suitors are genuinely funny.
- Household Tales EnglishYou’ll like these for their blunt, eerie storytelling, where a forest can feel genuinely dangerous and a talking animal may be wiser than the people around it. Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Ashenputtel still have a strange sharpness, though the violence and abrupt endings make this better for a taste of folklore than bedtime comfort.
- Irish Fairy Tales EnglishYou’ll like the way Stephens makes Irish myth feel mischievous and alive, especially in Fionn’s boyhood, where wisdom arrives through the Salmon of Knowledge rather than solemn instruction. The stories are strange, lyrical, and occasionally abrupt, with gods, warriors, and ordinary people all sharing the same unruly world.
- Lord Tony’s Wife EnglishIf you liked the Scarlet Pimpernel, this one takes you to Nantes during the Terror, where Carrier's drownings make the stakes genuinely grim, and Percy stays offstage longer than you'd want. The revenge plot against Yvonne is pure melodrama, but it's melodrama done with real conviction.
- Phineas Finn EnglishYou follow a likable, slightly weak young Irishman into Parliament and watch ambition, money, and three or four remarkable women (Lady Laura especially will break your heart a bit) tangle him up. Slow and gossipy in the best way, if you enjoy politics as human drama.
- Phineas Redux EnglishTrollope puts poor Phineas on trial for murder halfway through, and the fun is watching everyone who fawned over him quietly back away while Madame Max does the actual detective work. It's long and unhurried, but if political gossip and slow-burn loyalty appeal, you'll settle right in.
- Savrola EnglishChurchill's one novel, written in his twenties, and yes, the hero is basically Churchill with better hair, leading a revolution in a made-up Mediterranean republic. The politics are stagey, but the speeches crackle, and watching the young man rehearse his future self is oddly fascinating.
- The Duke’s Children EnglishIf you've spent any time with the Pallisers, this is the tender payoff: Plantagenet, newly widowed, trying to father grown children who keep falling in love with the wrong people. It's slower and sadder than the political books, and watching his stiffness soften is quietly moving.
- The Eustace Diamonds EnglishYou watch Lizzie Eustace bluff, scheme, and plead over a supposedly priceless diamond necklace, while Trollope patiently exposes the vanity and self-deception of polite society. It takes its time, but her nerve, self-pity, and sheer improvisational audacity keep the social comedy wonderfully alive.
- The Gadfly EnglishIf you can forgive some Victorian melodrama, the slow-burn wound between Arthur and Padre Montanelli, a priest he loves and can't forgive, will wreck you in the best way. It's a revolutionary adventure on the surface and a story about betrayed faith underneath.
- The Laughing Cavalier EnglishIf you liked the Scarlet Pimpernel, this is Orczy imagining his ancestor: Diogenes, a broke soldier of fortune in frozen 1620s Holland who takes a shady job abducting a girl and can't stop grinning about it. Pure swagger and snow, happily unserious, slow in patches.
- The Prime Minister EnglishYou watch the conscientious Plantagenet Palliser enter Downing Street while Glencora, his politically shrewd wife, tries to make power livable; Trollope makes cabinet meetings and dinner parties equally revealing. It moves patiently, but the moral pressure around Ferdinand Lopez gives the novel real bite.
- The Song of the Lark EnglishYou settle into Thea Kronborg’s stubborn, solitary climb from a Nebraska girl who plays piano for church services to an opera singer shaped by Chicago and the canyon country of Arizona. It’s patient and sometimes austere, but Cather makes artistic ambition feel physical, costly, and deeply alive.
- Three Lives EnglishYou settle into Stein’s deliberately repetitive prose and start hearing how each sentence shifts, especially in Melanctha’s restless conversations and Anna’s blunt, practical judgments. It’s strange, patient reading, sometimes frustrating, but rewarding if you like language turning ordinary lives into something formally new.
- Whose Body? EnglishA stranger's body turns up in a bathtub wearing nothing but a pince-nez, and Lord Peter Wimsey investigates mostly because it amuses him. The banter is the point here, though Sayers gives him real shell shock underneath, which keeps the froth from floating away entirely.
