- Brood of the Witch-Queen EnglishYou’ll enjoy this if you can settle into Sax Rohmer’s lurid, old-fashioned prose: Dr. Robert Cairn investigates Egyptian sorcery that feels increasingly nasty and intimate, with atmosphere built from séances, grim discoveries, and forbidden lore. It’s melodramatic and occasionally creaky, but the occult menace has a wonderfully poisonous imagination.
- Louis Lambert EnglishYou’ll like this if you can enjoy a strange, difficult book that treats a schoolboy’s notebooks and mystical speculations as seriously as any adventure. Louis Lambert’s intense mind, his friendship with the young Balzac, and Pauline’s quiet presence give the abstract passages a human ache.
- Modeste Mignon EnglishYou’d enjoy this if you like romantic novels that keep questioning romance: Modeste’s letters to the poet Canalis are tender, clever, and tangled up with literary vanity, while her father’s ruined fortunes add real pressure. It’s talky and socially observant, with Balzac gently exposing how people perform love before they understand it.
- Tarzan the Terrible EnglishYou get Tarzan dropped into Pal-ul-don, a hidden country of rival human peoples, dinosaurs, and wonderfully strange customs, with the loyal Om-at beside him. It’s pulpy and episodic rather than psychologically deep, but the lost-world invention keeps carrying you forward.
- The Secret House EnglishPure pulp, and it knows it: a scandal rag run by an editor nobody's ever seen, a blackmailer, and a country house rigged with hidden lifts and electric traps. If you want a fast, silly evening with Scotland Yard's T.B.
- When God Laughs EnglishYou read this for London’s hard, unsentimental eye on people pushed to their limits: the exhausted factory boy in The Apostate, the unlikely friendship in The Heathen, and the boxer’s brutal arithmetic in A Piece of Steak. The stories can feel blunt and uneven, but their anger still has heat.
