- A Strange Disappearance EnglishQ, the young detective who tells this one, is good company, quick with a disguise and a little vain about it, and watching him worry at why a sewing girl vanished from a rich man's house is half the fun. Expect Victorian melodrama under the sleuthing, and enjoy it anyway.
- An Autobiography EnglishRoosevelt narrates his own life the way he lived it, at full gallop, from a sickly boy building himself up with boxing lessons to ranching in the Dakota Badlands to the White House. Fair warning, he moralizes constantly and skips the painful parts, but the energy is real.
- Dead Souls EnglishChichikov rides around buying up dead serfs from provincial landowners, and every one of them (dreamy Manilov, miserly Plyushkin) is funnier and sadder than the last. It's absurd, digressive, and unfinished, which somehow suits it.
- Moonfleet EnglishYou follow John Trenchard through the Dorset village of Moonfleet, where smugglers, churchyards, and hidden passages give the story a wonderfully shadowy texture. The prose is old-fashioned and occasionally melodramatic, but the bond between John and the brooding Elzevir Block gives this adventure real feeling beneath its treasure-hunt machinery.
- The Castle of Otranto EnglishHonestly, it's a bit ridiculous, a giant helmet falls out of nowhere in chapter one and things only get stranger, but that's the fun. If you enjoy gothic gloom with a straight face barely holding, this short, fevered little book started the whole tradition.
- The Tempest EnglishYou spend time on an island with Prospero, Ariel, and Caliban, where magic, resentment, and theatrical illusion keep changing the ground beneath you. It’s airy and strange rather than tightly plotted, but the movement toward forgiveness gives the play a quietly human weight.
- Uncle Silas EnglishYou need patience with its leisurely Victorian pacing, but once Maud Ruthyn is placed under the care of her unsettling uncle Silas and the watchful Madame de la Rougierre, the house feels unsafe. It rewards you with suspicion, dread, and nasty uncertainty rather than shocks.
