Cousin Henry Anthony Trollope English
Most of it is one miserable man alone in a library, staring at the shelf where a hidden will sits, too cowardly to burn it or reveal it, and somehow that's riveting. If you like Trollope small-scale and psychological rather than sprawling, this is a quiet treat.
The Claverings Anthony Trollope English
Harry Clavering gets jilted for a rich old lord, then finds the widow back on his doorstep just after he's engaged to someone kinder, and Trollope refuses to make him a hero or a villain. If you like watching a decent, weak man squirm honestly, this is quietly satisfying.
The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Washington Irving English
You get a wonderfully companionable mix of travel sketches, ghostly tales, and gentle satire, with Geoffrey Crayon wandering through English inns and Christmas customs before giving you Rip Van Winkle and Ichabod Crane. It moves leisurely, but the wit and homesick warmth make it easy to settle into.
