Green Meadow Stories Thornton W. Burgess English
Peter Rabbit, Sammy Jay, and Old Granny Fox get into small scrapes in chapters short enough to read aloud at bedtime, each with a gentle little moral tucked in. Cozy and old-fashioned, better shared with a kid than read alone.
Rilla of Ingleside L. M. Montgomery English
You watch Rilla Blythe grow from a frivolous sixteen-year-old into someone steadied by wartime loss, while Susan’s care of the abandoned baby Jims brings warmth and grit. It’s more somber than the earlier Anne books, but its letters, small acts of courage, and unsentimental tenderness stay with you.
The Pilgrim’s Progress John Bunyan English
Every character is named for exactly what they are (Mr. Worldly Wiseman, Giant Despair), which sounds heavy-handed until you're stuck in the Slough of Despond yourself and it lands.
The Three Hostages John Buchan English
You get a more tired, thoughtful Richard Hannay here, moving through a postwar Europe where political idealism shades into manipulation. His decision to pose as a shell-shocked man gives the adventure an eerie psychological edge, though the pace is more deliberate than in The Thirty-Nine Steps.
