Discourses on Livy Niccolò Machiavelli, traduzido por Ninian Hill Thomson English
You get Machiavelli thinking through how republics preserve liberty, using Rome’s tribunes, public conflict, and political institutions as his working examples. It’s dense and sometimes repetitive rather than easy reading, but rewarding if you enjoy watching a sharp, unsentimental mind test political ideals against history.
Evelina Fanny Burney English
You get an awkward education in eighteenth-century manners as Evelina blunders through assemblies, opera boxes, and the Branghton family’s dreadful company. Her letters make every slight feel immediate, while Lord Orville’s restraint gives the romance room to breathe.
In Search of the Castaways Jules Verne, traduzido por J. B. Lippincott & Co. English
Verne at his most cheerful: a half-eaten note in a bottle sends Lord Glenarvan's crew chasing the 37th parallel around the globe, and the scatterbrained geographer Paganel (who boarded the wrong ship entirely) steals every scene. Pure adventure, earthquakes and condors included, no deep themes required.
She H. Rider Haggard English
Ayesha is the reason to go: a two-thousand-year-old queen who talks philosophy while casually terrifying everyone, and she gets stranger the closer you look. The Victorian adventure trappings creak a bit (and the colonial attitudes with them), but the ending in the caves genuinely unsettles.
The Decameron Giovanni Boccaccio, traduzido por John Payne English
Ten young Florentines wait out the plague by telling each other stories, and most of them are funnier and filthier than you'd expect from the 1300s, full of scheming friars and wives outwitting dull husbands. Dip in and out; nobody reads all hundred straight through.
The Giant Raft Jules Verne, traduzido por W. J. Gordon English
You get a wonderfully unusual river journey here: Joam Garral and his family travel down the Amazon on an enormous floating farm, while a buried mystery shadows the celebration. It’s leisurely and full of period geography, but the raft, the river, and the family tension stay with you.
The Humbugs of the World P. T. Barnum não ficção English
Yes, the great showman himself grousing about frauds, and the irony lands better than you'd expect. He goes after spirit mediums, quack medicines, the Moon Hoax, all in chatty anecdotes, and half the fun is watching him carefully separate his kind of humbug from the cruel kind.
Through the Brazilian Wilderness Theodore Roosevelt não ficção English
Roosevelt cataloguing birds and piranhas is pleasant enough, but the book turns quietly harrowing once the River of Doubt starts eating canoes and he's running a fever, still writing calmly. If you like old expedition accounts with real teeth, this earns its slow stretches.
