Household Tales Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, traduzido por Margaret Hunt English
You’ll like these for their blunt, eerie storytelling, where a forest can feel genuinely dangerous and a talking animal may be wiser than the people around it. Hansel and Gretel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Ashenputtel still have a strange sharpness, though the violence and abrupt endings make this better for a taste of folklore than bedtime comfort.
Lay Down Your Arms Bertha von Suttner, traduzido por T. Holmes English
Martha starts as an Austrian countess who thinks war is glorious, then it takes her first husband at Solferino and keeps coming for everyone she loves. It's earnest and sometimes preachy, but her fury feels earned, and knowing Suttner wrote it decades before 1914 gives it a chill.
Passages from the Life of a Philosopher Charles Babbage English
Babbage is cranky, brilliant, and completely unable to stay on topic, so you get the Analytical Engine one chapter and a war on London's organ grinders the next. If you enjoy an eccentric Victorian mind wandering wherever it pleases, this is good company; skip it if you want tidy memoir.
