- A Pair of Blue Eyes EnglishEarly Hardy, before he got so heavy, though the sadness is already creeping in at the edges. You get Elfride torn between two very different men, the Cornish cliffs (including the scene that supposedly gave us the word cliffhanger), and an ending that plays fair but still stings.
- David Copperfield EnglishDickens at his warmest, following a boy from a miserable childhood into messy adulthood. You get Aunt Betsey chasing donkeys off her lawn, Micawber forever expecting something to turn up, and Uriah Heep making your skin crawl.
- Dubliners EnglishNothing much happens in these stories, and that's the point: small humiliations, missed chances, whole lives caught in a glance. If you can sit with quiet sadness, the last one, with Gabriel at the party and snow falling over Ireland, will stay with you for years.
- Far from the Madding Crowd EnglishYou get Bathsheba Everdene, proud, impulsive, and fiercely determined to run her own life, alongside Gabriel Oak’s steady, unsentimental devotion. The rural setting feels vivid, but Hardy lets the weather, accidents, and bad judgment turn romance into something painful and morally complicated.
- Jude the Obscure EnglishFair warning, this one hurts: Jude the stonemason teaching himself Greek at night, aching toward a university that will never let him in, and Sue Bridehead, restless and contradictory and painfully real. Read it when you can handle Hardy at his darkest and most tender.
- Silas Marner EnglishA lonely weaver counts his gold every night until it's stolen, and what wanders in to replace it changes him completely. Quiet and slow in the best way, and short enough that the sweetness never wears thin.
- The Woodlanders EnglishHardy at his gentlest and saddest, which is saying something. You'll fall for Giles Winterbourne, who plants trees like he's shaking hands with them, and for quiet Marty South watching from the edges; if you need happy endings, maybe hand it back now.
