National Avenue Booth Tarkington English
This is the quiet, sadder cousin of The Magnificent Ambersons: you follow Dan Oliphant, an unstoppable booster pouring his life into a suburban development while smoke swallows the old avenue and his New York wife despises everything he loves. Slow and melancholy, but the ending earns it.
The Small Bachelor P. G. Wodehouse English
Wodehouse off his usual English turf, loose in Jazz Age New York, and it suits him: a shy painter mooning over a girl, a policeman who'd rather write poetry, and an efficiency expert whose theories collapse the moment he falls in love. Pure silliness, expertly plotted, zero stakes.
Ukridge Stories P. G. Wodehouse English
You spend time with Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge, a shameless sponger whose “certain little proposition” usually leaves Corky managing the fallout. The stories are breezy, repetitive in a pleasing way, and funniest when Ukridge’s huge confidence collides with other people’s refusal to finance it.
Whose Body? Dorothy L. Sayers English
A stranger's body turns up in a bathtub wearing nothing but a pince-nez, and Lord Peter Wimsey investigates mostly because it amuses him. The banter is the point here, though Sayers gives him real shell shock underneath, which keeps the froth from floating away entirely.
