Sailing Alone Around the World Joshua Slocum non-fiction
You spend time aboard the Spray with Slocum as he repairs gear, outwits bad weather, and chats with people in far-off ports. The sailing details are wonderfully practical, while his dry humor keeps the long calms and occasional dangers from feeling heavy.
The Mystery of Edwin Drood Charles Dickens
You get a murky, atmospheric mystery set around Cloisterham Cathedral, with the brooding choirmaster John Jasper and his opium-fueled visions at its center. It stops unfinished, so the missing solution can frustrate you, but Dickens’s sly character work and shadowy mood make the speculation part of the fun.
The Woman in White Wilkie Collins
You get Count Fosco, a villain so charming you catch yourself liking him, and Marian Halcombe, who's braver than any of the men. It's long and Victorian, sure, but the moonlit road meeting hooks you early and the plotting stays sharp all the way through.
