Discourses on Livy Niccolò Machiavelli, translated by Ninian Hill Thomson
You get Machiavelli thinking through how republics preserve liberty, using Rome’s tribunes, public conflict, and political institutions as his working examples. It’s dense and sometimes repetitive rather than easy reading, but rewarding if you enjoy watching a sharp, unsentimental mind test political ideals against history.
Shirley Charlotte Brontë
Slower and stranger than Jane Eyre, this one, but Shirley Keeldar herself is worth the wait: an heiress who runs her own estate and calls herself Captain Keeldar, half teasing, half serious. If you like Yorkshire moors, mill riots, and quiet, prickly friendships between women, settle in.
The Child of the Cavern Jules Verne, translated by Vincent Parke and Company
You’re here for Jules Verne’s fascination with machinery, mines, and whole communities hidden underground, with engineer James Starr and the mysterious Nell giving the adventure some human warmth. The suspense is old-fashioned and occasionally creaky, but the coal-lit setting stays wonderfully strange.
