Bambi Felix Salten, translated by Whittaker Chambers
You get a sharper, stranger book than the film suggests: the forest feels beautiful and perilous, and Bambi’s encounters with the old stag and the hunters give his growing independence real weight. It’s quiet, observant, and occasionally bleak, best read slowly rather than as a children’s adventure.
The Square Emerald Edgar Wallace
A brisk 1920s thriller where the detective is Leslie Maughan, a sharp young woman at Scotland Yard who out-thinks everyone around her. Wallace piles on foggy London, blackmail, a very odd butler, and it moves fast; just don't expect deep character studies, it's pure momentum.
