Phoebe, Junior Margaret Oliphant
Phoebe is the fun here: clever, unsentimental, fully aware her grandfather sells butter and her suitor is a dull rich boy she could run like a business, and Oliphant lets her be right. Quiet, wry Victorian social comedy, so skip it if you need big drama.
The Bolshevik Myth Alexander Berkman non-fiction
You get a painfully firsthand account of Berkman’s journey through Soviet Russia, from early hope to growing disillusionment. His visits to prisons, encounters with workers, and sharp self-criticism make it compelling reading, though the political detail can feel repetitive.
The Canterbury Tales Geoffrey Chaucer
The Wife of Bath alone is worth the price of admission, bragging about outliving five husbands before her story even starts. It's rowdy, gossipy, sometimes flat-out filthy, and the Middle English takes patience, so grab a good modern edition and read it out loud.
You Can’t Win Jack Black
Jack was a real burglar and hobo, and he tells it flat and unrepentant, hopping freights, cracking safes, sitting in Salt Chunk Mary's kitchen over beans and coffee. If you like your outlaws matter-of-fact instead of romantic, this is oddly good company, and it convinced Burroughs too.
