Aspects of the Novel E. M. Forster non-fiction
Forster basically chats you through how novels work, coining flat versus round characters and grumbling that story ("and then, and then") is the novel's most primitive part. If you like fiction but want to see the machinery, his lecture-hall wit makes criticism feel like gossip.
Discourses on Livy Niccolò Machiavelli, translated by Ninian Hill Thomson
You get Machiavelli thinking through how republics preserve liberty, using Rome’s tribunes, public conflict, and political institutions as his working examples. It’s dense and sometimes repetitive rather than easy reading, but rewarding if you enjoy watching a sharp, unsentimental mind test political ideals against history.
Struggles and Triumphs P. T. Barnum non-fiction
You read this for Barnum’s shameless, fascinating account of turning hoaxes, curiosities, and publicity into a career, with the Jenny Lind tour and American Museum at its center. He is boastful and slippery about his own virtue, but that self-promotion is half the entertainment, especially if you enjoy watching a showman build his legend in real time.
The Documents in the Case Dorothy L. Sayers, Robert Eustace
You reconstruct the murder through letters, diary pages, newspaper cuttings, and laboratory reports, so the pleasure lies in noticing what each document quietly gives away. It’s a cool, formal experiment rather than a warm character novel, but the poisonous-mushroom science makes the puzzle unusually distinctive.
Whose Body? Dorothy L. Sayers
A stranger's body turns up in a bathtub wearing nothing but a pince-nez, and Lord Peter Wimsey investigates mostly because it amuses him. The banter is the point here, though Sayers gives him real shell shock underneath, which keeps the froth from floating away entirely.
