A General View of Positivism Auguste Comte, translated by J. H. Bridges
You get a clear, strange introduction to Comte’s attempt to turn science into a moral and social order, complete with a “religion of Humanity” and a calendar of scientific heroes. It’s earnest, systematic, and sometimes maddening, but rewarding if you like ideas pushed far past ordinary common sense.
Emile Jean-Jacques Rousseau
What’s Wrong with the World G. K. Chesterton non-fiction
You get Chesterton’s cheerful contrarian mind at full stretch here, arguing for small property, family life, and ordinary people against modern systems, with jokes arriving in the middle of serious arguments. It’s lively but polemical and often dated, especially on women, so you read it for the provocations rather than a ready-made political program.
