Salammbô Gustave Flaubert, translated by J. S. Chartres
Flaubert rebuilding ancient Carthage stone by jeweled stone: Mâtho stealing the sacred veil, mercenaries starving in a gorge, everything gorgeous and cruel at once. If you can enjoy prose that lingers over temples and carnage equally, this is strange, heady stuff.
Satan’s Diary Leonid Andreyev, translated by Herman Bernstein
Satan takes over the body of an American millionaire to have some fun with humanity, and the joke turns on him: people out-devil the devil at every step. It's bitter, sardonic stuff, Andreyev's last book, and if you like your satire bleak it lands hard.
