- Helen McGill is pushing forty, tired of baking for her ungrateful brother, so she buys a horse-drawn book wagon from a funny little redheaded man and just goes. Short, cheerful, and sweet without being sappy, perfect for an afternoon when you need one.
- Miss Amelia Butterworth narrates this one, a nosy, tart-tongued spinster who spots a body in the empty house next door and decides Detective Gryce needs her help whether he wants it or not. If you like your Victorian mysteries with dry wit, she's great company.
