Look Homeward, Angel Thomas Wolfe
Eugene Gant grows up in a boarding house full of strangers, torn between a stonecutter father who rages like weather and a mother who counts every penny. Wolfe's sentences pour out in floods, so if you like language that overreaches on purpose, this one aches beautifully.
Lost Face Jack London
Seven cold, grim little stories, and worth it just for To Build a Fire, where a man's whole fate hangs on wet matches and a dog who knows better than he does. Read it in winter with something hot; the title story's ending is wickedly clever.
Manhattan Transfer John Dos Passos
You have to be okay with drift here, since it jumps between dozens of lives (Ellen the actress, Jimmy the restless reporter, poor Bud fresh off the ferry) and never settles. But if you like cities more than plots, the noise of 1920s New York gets into you.
